Give a live-cd distro like "knoppix" or even better "slax", which comes as a 250Mb iso and doesn't need more than 32Mb ram to boot. If that works and recognizes your ram it's Mandy playing up. If that's the case just boot from cd1 and opt for the "upgrade 2007" option which will only take a few minutes.
