Hi again, I installed the stable version too. I'm still convinced it is a display/java issue. I have a second application that uses java.....called groupwise......it has the same symptoms....application windows open but they are blank. One more things though, if I click within the windows, the program reacts as it should. So, I'm just not 'seeing' the program. I don't see anything in 'gset-compiz' that might affect the java apps.
