For the newbie list maybe it helps if i point out that Checkinstall is a
program that also needs to be installed first. Can't remember is
Mandriva installs it by default.

One of the nice features is that you can install again if you upgrade
without compiling.
Dependencies is actually what is missing. At best the package looks at
itself. Professional rpm bakers don't like checkinstall (among others)
for this reason. But for the purpose requested it works beautifully.
