Did /home used to be on its own partition and is now on the
root partition perhaps? Did you do any disk partitioning of
any sort during the upgrade?
Miark
Nope. Plugged in the fresh 2007-CD1, booted and choosed Upgrade.
Everything else seems to work fine. My postfix emailserver is running
and the aliases-file is intact.

my bet is that the original /home is still there, but on (say) /hdc6
while a new /home got built and set to mount on say /hda6 when /hdc6 was
not found at boot time, for what ever reason (loose power cable?)
all the files are still there, just not mounted in the correct spot.
copying the files to external media will work just fine as long as the
user doing the copying (writing to the hard drive) is the same user you
want to be able to access the files.
As this is the newbie list, and as Joe Hill is about as likely as a
raindrop to tell you about 'fish', as it is a 'kde' box to 'kde' box gui
for ssh, when used in a konqurer. (heck he may not even have ever used
it, as much as he like/loves KDE desktops), you need to know the IP# of
the computer you wish to connect, but for me, with both computers
running a KDE desktop, if I type
"fish://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/var/www/puke" I am asked for root's password
to connect to on the box 192.168.0.100, and after I supply the password,
I am connected to /var/www/puke, which since I am root, I can write to
or read from. any files or folders I copy over will be owned by root.
you can use any user and/or spot on the mounted file systems that user
would normally be allowed access to.
