    Good morning,

This message was first shipped to your commercial department, where I
learned to subscribe as a newbee.
The wbsite, mentioned to read the FAQ, is not available or under
    construction.

    This is my message:
I tried very hard and several times to correctly install Mandriva 2007
Powerpack.(bought last week). I am unable to start Mandriva in graphical
mode, always the xterm console comes up. I checked the options of the
graphical server and the graphical interface at start-up is
    activated. This
morning I re-installed Mandriva and selected both KDE and Gnome. The
    result
    is the same: xterm console.
You need to know that I quit Suse for just one reason: lack of
    assistence.
I sincerely expect Mandriva to come up with a solution.
    Regards,
Joep van Ham, newbee with Mandriva.

P.S. the FREE download, received with Linux magazine # 44 does start up
correctly in Konquerer. This means that my hardware is sufficient to
presernt Mandriva in graphical mode. Updating FREE by Powerpack does not
    work either, for
    in FREE \\\'root\\\'is disabled.
    Thanks in advance.

At the console, type in your userid hit enter and then enter your password and hit enter. Now type in su hit enter and enter the root password. Now type XFdrake and hit enter. You should now be able to configure your monitor and graphical card.

And you should know, no one here is an employee of Mandriva, paid to offer support, we do it as a community effort, putting/paying back some of the help others have given to us. if there is anyone paid to be here, please speak up and correct me.

when you say "in FREE \\\'root\\\'is disabled" I am not sure what you mean. how are you trying to be root? what commands are you giving? root should (must) always work, but some security settings can effect how root must be accessed, and what it can do.

also, "xterm" and a bash prompt are NOT the same thing, while in x you start a term program called xterm, you do get a logged in users bash shell prompt (if the bash shell is selected for that user) in the non-Xwindows (run level 3, No Xwindows running) that is just the login prompt, and the shell will be decided by who logs in. are you saying that when the text screen starts up, no one is asked to login? (then auto login of some user was setup during the install, not what I think most of us would recommend, but no big deal to change or even leave alone)

as far as configuring your video card correctly, the other instruction about XFdrake is/are correct., BTW what video card do you have?

If you are going to leave this distribution due to "lack of assistance", don't let the door hit you in the ass, if you are here to try and learn something new, or more about GNU Linux and the Mandrivia distribution in particular, then welcome and I hope you find the assistance here more to your style and needs.
