The NVidia installer does that too, connects to ftp.nvidia.com, snags the
necessary modules, builds, and installs them. :-)
Kinda why I always wondered why they were even packaged as RPM's, they're
so
easy to install/uninstall. The RPM's on the other hand, can leave stuff
behind
when you uninstall, as I discovered to my great dismay. I miss Urban
Terror so
much. Now all I have is my pr0n. Sniff.

The reason that you need an rpm is because that way you get to use the
dkms method i.e. when you reboot into a new kernel you dont have to go
through the whole install routine again.
