I got an external 320 GB USB HD.
It is recognized as removable drive but I get only 298 GB out of 320 GB!
What happened to the rest?
How shall I format the disk so I can read and write this HD under XP and
linux?
Is it possible to partition this HD so I can backup my home partition
and also store multimedia files on a second partition?
Thank you

Ok, it is either possible that, if you partitioned it with linux, that linux
made its own unmountable partition on it. However if you formatted it with
another partitioner, then they only reason that i can think of is that the
partition took up some space, leaving you with 298 gb. Alot of the time the
partition will take up alot of space depending on the hdd size and you will
notice a different amount of free space left then what the manufacturer said
because when the manufacturer tested it, more then likely they didnt partition
it. Id say that your read out is perfectly normal...

if you want the hdd to be visible in linux and windows, format it with a NTFS
or FAT32 partition. Both can be read by linux. Last i heard though, linux cant
write to a ntfs, but i dont know if thats true anymore.
