Do take into account that Linux always uses as much RAM as it can get.
As soon as you need RAM to run programs, Linux will release enough for
the software to run. Things run faster from RAM than from constantly
loading things from harddisk.
My machine has 512Mb also, and there appears 10Mb free. Yet I can run
anything I like. Simultaneously.
