Well. I now have uninstalled all ati/dkms stuff, and tried Charles A Edwards
tips about using the xorg/Mesa driver/drm module. No Go.
Deleted xorg.conf, ran drakx11 from cli togenerate a clean xorg.conf w/vesa.
Then ran ati-driver-installer. X starts OK but no dri, log says:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed
(/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
Adding Option "AIGLX" "off" to xorg.conf and reboot.
startx gives the blue startup screen and then back
to cli w/the following message:
The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
Ignoring extra symbols
Xorg.0.log has no errors, seems as fglrx/dri loads as it should, but
now .xsession-errors gives lots of errors:
