I removed all the rpms that referred to Nvidia and went with the dkms version 
of the legacy drivers, and am still having the trouble.  I can switch between 
the Nvidia supplied drivers and the Mandrake dkms drivers and I have the same 
problem in both.  Here's the xorg.conf (stripped of many lines):

Performance in Kmail is really bad, takes about 20 seconds of 100% CPU to 
redisplay after minimization.  I don't think it's AA fonts as turning off 
anti-aliasing doesn't have much impact on performance.  It feels something 
like a cache problem (maybe font cache) - if I enable the menu panel tooltips 
(the ugly popups when you mouseover panel icons) the first one will be really 
slow (like 5+ seconds to display) and after the same one and others will 
display a lot faster.
