Well, that worked, kinda..
After copying the file and renaming it appropriately,
when i run startx now, it looks like it loads the libraries, detects the
correct card (ATI 3D Rage Mobility - this is a laptop), correct mem size,
etc., including all the panel sizes, BUT now gives,
(EE)Screen(s) found, but none hava a usable configuration.

cp /root/XF86Config.new /etc/X11/XF86Config

At least, thet's where you put it in Linux...  worth a try, no?
