Hi,
Usually, this means you do not have a valid
depth/resolution specified. I would go to
/etc/X11/XF86Config[-4] (distro dependant) and
1. check whether in Section "Screen" the Device and
Monitor fields really refer to existing monitor and
graphical device (spelling mistake ?) I suspect they
should because they should have been generated
automatically....
2. reduce the color depth to something you are sure
should be supported for instance.
DefaultDepth 16
3. check that at least one of the Subsection "Display"
should be supported for instance:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
(don't know whether the viewport is necessary I don't
have one myself...)
4. save your file and try again...
If it still hang then post your XF86Config
NOTE some distros have 2 such files (usually
XF86Config and XF86Config-4) in addition I had the
privilege of having mine (RH 7.1) decide by itself
which version of XFree was good for me and install
3.3.6 on a laptop and 4.03 on a desktop check which
XFree version you are running (usually on top of the
log)
good luck
