Hi all, please CC me as I'm not on this list (but will keep an eye on
the archives). Thanks.

I have a newly requisitioned Dell Latitude C600 with an 8MB ATI
Mobility M3 card, running Mandrake 8.0 with the stock XFree86 version
4.0.3 patch level 7mdk. For the life of me, I cannot get this thing
to display at 1280x1024 resolution. I've installed the
XF86Config-1280 file from Dell's support pages (to both
/etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/XF86Config-4), I've tried other
config files referenced by others on this list, and I've tried just
about every combination of Xconfigurator settings I can imagine or
have seen mentioned from Google searches. This laptop refuses to
display in any other resolution than 1024x768.

At this point, I'm so frustrated, I'm half tempted to install Windows
<shudder> just to see whether /it/ can display in the higher
resolution!

I admit to being a pretty clueless XFree86 newbie, although I never
had this much trouble with my desktop Linux box. ;)

So questions: is it even possible for this machine to display at
higher than 1024x768? If so, what magic XFree86 incantation am I
missing? If not, why do all the Dell pages lie about the maximum
resolution? ;)

I'll mention that this machine came to me running RH7.1, which I also
couldn't get to display at a higher resolution, although I didn't try
nearly as hard as with the Mandrake install.

Any help or hints will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
-Barry
