I have found that when X starts with such  a high resolution, try 
"Free86 -configure". 
This usually sets up a default 640x480 resolution or better, rather than the
way xf86config does it (and simpler). If anything, after doing the XFree86
-configure command, edit manually the XF86Config file in your subdisplay
sections (for 8 bit 12 16 so on) enter a line with "modes       "800x600"
"(keep the frist set of "" out of course) AND  plx backup your config file :)
send a message and tell me how it went, Il see if anything else I can think of
helps.
