The install file says that GNU ld and as are not supported and to remove them when compiling X11 4.1.0. But, that seems to imply that an alternate set exists. For Debian GNU/Linux, the GNU tools are the default. I am getting an error when ld is called with the -lz option, and I suspect that this is the GNU ld incompatibility problem. Is there a workaround?
