It finally works - although I still don't understand exactly. I ran Xconfigurator and chose "unsupported VGA card" instead of the one at the end of the list, then managed to write a XF86Config-4 file. XF86Config only seems to work for 3.3.6. Changing the driver to vesa, it works.
