You can probably safely build 2.95.3 with 2.96, since the gcc build process
works like so:

1) Build gcc with the existing compiler.
2) build gcc again with the compiler generated by step 1.
3) Build gcc again with the compiler generated by step 2.
4) Compare the results of steps 2 and 3 - If they're the same, install the
compiler from step 3, else fail.

Subject: RE: [Newbie]trouble with 4.1.0?? (Radeon 32mb DDR/AMD
Athlon/Asus A7M266)

Hi, Possibly this does not belong fully in this
thread, but the information could be helpful there
too...
I upgraded my kernel to 2.4.9 some weeks ago, then
found out that having RH 7.1 I had probably used
gcc2.96 which seems to be a NO-NO... On another PC I
installed Roswell, it still has gcc 2.96 on it!
trying to downgrade to 2.95.3 (this was a few weeks
ago...) I realised it also had to be compiled (the
chicken / egg problem) someone on this list told me I
could compile it with 2.96 and then use it, another
source mentionned that RH had not managed to compile
their kernel with 2.96 and had included in the
distribution a kgcc which is an older compiler
(??!!??) and which one should use...
can you make some light on the matter?
Thanks in advance
Lionel
