XFree86 can indeed solve this problem, but I'm not entirely certain whether you need XF86 3.3.x or 4.x to support that chip (if they both work, *ALWAYS* use 4.x). To download it (these instructions pertain to the source code, so it works for Linux, Solaris, or *BSD):
1) Grab the source code tarballs (I forget the exact filenames... I downloaded 4.1.0 the day it went stable, and repackaged it as one huge tarball for internal use) 2) Under Solaris, run "tar xvfzp foo.tgz" on each file (where foo is the name of the file) in numerical order (the files are numbered). 3) cd into the resulting xc directory 4) under the config/cf directory, copy xf86site.def to host.def, then edit host.def. If you don't know what to change in this file, change nothing. 5) cd back to the root of the xc tree, and run make World (this will take a *LONG* time on your box. It took about 25min on an Ath/1000 with 768MB of RAM and ATA100 disks under Linux) 6) run make install 7) run make install.man 8) configure X... Ususally, running XFree86 -configure will do the trick. 9) get a real window manager ;-) I know that some people actually like twm, but I hate it. If you can get OpenWindows or CDE to work, use those... Otherwise, check out KDE [http://www.kde.org] (RAM-intensive) or GNOME [http://www.gnome.org] (even more RAM-intensive) or XFCE [http://www.xfce.org] (lightning-quick and fairly easy to use) or Window Maker [http://www.windowmaker.org] (looks like NeXTSTEP. That's a good thing, AFAIC). ROX-desktop [http://rox.sourceforge.net] is pretty good too (but it needs a window manager. Again, I recommend XFCE or Window Maker) If Solaris gives too many problems (Sol 8.0 really prefers higher-end hardware (PIII/Ath, 600MHz or better, with tons of RAM), try *BSD (I highly recommend NetBSD... It rules) -----Original Message----- From: sean pu [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, October 03, 2001 3:58 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Newbie]Video Card (Trident 9750) Hello: I just join in this group. Looks like you are the expert. May I ask you several questions? I am a new learner on Unix. I try to install Solaris 7 on my computer(Pentium II 233 mHz). But the video card (Trident 9750) is not on the list so I can only use 16 Color on Xwindow. I heard XFree86 may solve this problem. I try to download version 4.10 from Window system. Somehow they showed with Winzip icon. I don't know whether they are tgz file or not. I copy them to Solaris and try both auto and manual install. Those files are not recognized. Q1. Does Xfree86 can solve my problem? Q2. What's the correct way to download file? (I don't know how to set up internet connection in Solaris. Thanks a lot.
