I am having trouble with a new install of XFree86 4.1.0 under OS X 10.1 on a G4 400.
I followed the instructions at ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.1.0/binaries/Darwin-ppc/Install. I installed all the mandatory files, plus Xhtml.tgz and Xquartz.tgz. (Are there other optional ones that I should have gotten?) The installer told me that it had finished successfully. I added /usr/X11R6/bin to the default $PATH. When I type "startx -- -quartz" at the command line, the screen goes blank for a moment, as if it's going to work, and then it returns to the Aqua desktop, with the following printed to the terminal: > Running in parallel with Mac OS X Quartz window server. > > XFree86 Version 4.1.0 / X Window System > (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6510) > Release Date: 2 June 2001 > If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your hardware is > newer than the above date, look for a newer version before > reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ) > Operating System: Darwin > Display mode: Quartz > > Fatal server error: > assert failed on line 454 of darwinKeyboard.c! > > OsVendorFatalError > AbortDDX > Quitting XDarwin... > X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). The line that stands out is "assert failed on line 454 of darwinKeyboard.c!" I am using a non-Apple keyboard and mouse (a macally ikey and a Kensington ValuMouse USB 3 Button). Is this what's causing the problem? If so, what can I do, short of buying a new keyboard and/or mouse? Unplugging all my other USB devices doesn't help. Any ideas would be appreciated.
