Get kernel 2.4.12 (skip .10 or .11, both are a little buggy) from
www.kernel.org, get XFree86 4.1.0 from ftp://ftp.xfree86.org (get the source
code.) Since you've got an AIW, you'll also want the GATOS-ATi stuff from
www.linuxvideo.org. You will need the X source to install it, hence the
reason that I recommend upgrading from sources (you also have no real choice
except to build the kernel from source. Make sure that you have the devel
tools installed).

To copy a KWrite buffer into Mozilla, you can highlight the text that you
want, and center-click in the Mozilla window... This is a standard X
feature, and should work between any applications that use X (including text
apps running in an xterm). I frequently use this to save retyping code
snippets and command examples (paste it straight into the CLI).

APM is Advanced Power Management. It can do some whizzy power-save things,
along with auto-power-off, but if you don't have it, it doesn't really
hurt... These errors probably aren't.

Also, once you've upgraded, try to get rid of the NoAccel option at all
costs. Not only does this disable 3D accel, it disables 2D accel as well
(doubleplusungood).

Subject: [Newbie]ATI RADEON A.I.W. work - around

This is how I got my Mandrake 8.0 system running the X server on my ASUS
A7M266 / ATI RADEON A.I.W. system.
As I'm sure your'e tired of hearing, the standard configuration using
the Accelerated driver locks up without log output so theres nothing to
go on.
With all I've read in the lists the last few days, I w.a.g. ed that the
NoAccel mode might at least get me a screen up. It did, so I'm passing
along how I did it for anyone who falls into the same hole I did.
See the attached RadeonFix.txt
Only a couple of lines changed from the XFdrake configuration but it
makes X go.

I have a couple of questions too.
There are some warnings and errors in my attached log file. I tried to
look up APM (see the first one) in the man pages but found nothing.
What does it do?

The system seems to be stable at the moment as I'm writing this with
Mozilla.
Finally I've heard I'll need to update my system to Kernel 2.4.10 to get
the fix for the 761 chip set and to XFree86 4.1.0 to get the most stable
accelerated server.
Your recommendation on the best sources for these (sourcefourge?) would
also be appreciated, as well as any pointers you might have. I don't
want much do I?

I feel much better about all of this now that I have my precious GUI
back thanks in large part to all of you who contribute to the list.
Keep up the good work.!

Thanks again
    John Seabrook
p.s. I hope attachments work for this list cause I haven't quite figured
out how to copy a KWrite buffer to Mozilla yet.
