This sounds like the normal function. Actually all but a few pixels go off of the screen.
Since the selection point of the pointer is the left edge, you should be able to move the left edge of the pointer to the very right edge of the screen. This way, you are able to select the entire area of the screen. This is, of course, considering that your pointer goes from the upper left to the lower right (same direction as the back-slash "\" key). If your pointer points the other way they you should be able to have the mouse go off the left side of the screen.
