I can't say about XFree prior to 4.1 since that is the version I started
with.  I can just answer over all of the other operating systems I've used
(Solaris, OS/2, some of the infinite Windows flavors).  Maybe XFree
changed to match these other OSs?

Perhaps someone else could point out what happened.
