I can't answer your question in detail Jose but I can give you an example
of when backingstore is important. I posted a question about this about 1
month ago. No one seems to know the answer to my question so I'll take
this opportunity to appeal once more - can anyone answer the question
below ?
Backingstore ensures that what is displayed in a window is not corrupted
when other windows are brought over the top. For example, when I use the
graphing and plotting package PAW, if I bring a window over the top of my
PAW window, and then remove that window, the region of my PAW window that
was covered remains blank. I have to replot to display the full graph or
graphic that was in the PAW window. Or, if I change to another page and
then return to the page that contains the PAW window, the whole PAW window
is completely blank until I replot. This being said, I have not had
problems with any other programs having graphical images blanked in this
manner so I think that until you discover a problem like this, you may not
need to include backingstore. As you can see in my question below, I have
troubles with backingstore, but what I've discovered since posting the
question below is that my problem may be specific to the FVWM window
manager, people in my office using the gnome window manager don't seem to
have problems with their PAW windows.
Cheers
Craig

I'm working on a recently upgraded debian machine, running the
latest "unstable" version.
I'm using;
xfree86 version 4.1.0-6
fvwm version 2.4.0-3
Before the upgrade, the backingstore function of XFree86 worked. I use it
so that the histograms displayed in my Paw windows do not disappear when
another window is brought over the Paw window or when I move to a
different page and then back again. The screen section in XF86config-4 is;
Section "Screen"
Option "backingstore"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "ATI Rage 128 (generic)"
Monitor "Fujitsu VL-1700SS"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection
EndSection
Anyone know how I can correct this problem ? Or, perhaps this is not a
XF86 problem but an fvwm problem ?
Interestingly I don't have this problem when I use Paw++, only when using
Paw.
