MGA also does this... I think that most newer ATi hardware supports it, too,
but I don't know if the driver does.

Some XF86 4.1.0 drivers, like glint (for Permedia chipset)
support 24 bit with 8 bit overlays.  Seems a bit fragile,
but works for most of the apps I use that need it.
