Don't know about slackware, I installed RH 7.2 (enigma) on an old armada 7710. The 
install program
installs both 3.3.6 and 4.1.0, then noticing that acceleration is only available in 
3.3.6 default
X to 3.3.6. it is obviously possible to redirect X to point to XFree86 (4.1.0) in that 
case one
must use vesa (i.e. forget the acceleration)
