Hi,
usually the 640x480 screen means that your card has not been recognised as supported 
and the
server uses the vga driver which works for everything...
You should probably check which driver is used in your device section. Basically, if 
you don't
mind no having acceleration and are using X 4.x.x switching to the vesa driver should 
give you the
resolution you wish to have. Try and if you don't get it, post your XF86Config[-4]

PS if you run X 3.3.6 try SVGA as a driver (you might even get accel...)
