Hi,
This is one of the standard reaction of X when it does not recognise the card...
I would go on compaq web site they have the specs for their PCs there (actually you 
can even type
the serial number and get the configuration the machine was shipped with...
If you also have Windoze on the machine you can get that information from the control 
panel...
in any case you should also try to find out which version of X you are running:
X -version
I suspect you have 3.3.6
save your XF86Config and try running XFree86 -configure or Xconfigurator they might 
generate a
better XF86Config  (specially if you have found out which card you have...)

It is a bit complicated to tell you what else to do : it depends on whether you are 
running 3.3.6
or 4.x.x
the screen resolution can be set in either the one of the screen sections (3.3.6) or 
in the
display subsection of the screen section (4.x.x)
I would say if you have no succes with the new XF86Config[-4]
 then post it and we can try further...
