I seem to have almost the same exact problem, but in the opposite direction. I can only get 1600x1200 resolution on mine ( the max the card supports ). I'm running FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE with XFree86 4.1 with an ATI Mobility M4 32MB card on a Dell Latitude C800.
