I seem to have almost the same exact problem, but in the opposite
direction. I can only get 1600x1200 resolution on mine ( the max the
card supports ). I'm running FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE with XFree86 4.1 with
an ATI Mobility M4 32MB card on a Dell Latitude C800.

Hi,
This is one of the standard reaction of X when it does not recognise the
card...
I would go on compaq web site they have the specs for their PCs there
(actually you can even type
the serial number and get the configuration the machine was shipped
with...
If you also have Windoze on the machine you can get that information
from the control panel...
in any case you should also try to find out which version of X you are
running:
X -version
I suspect you have 3.3.6
save your XF86Config and try running XFree86 -configure or Xconfigurator
they might generate a
better XF86Config (specially if you have found out which card you
have...)

It is a bit complicated to tell you what else to do : it depends on
whether you are running 3.3.6
or 4.x.x
the screen resolution can be set in either the one of the screen
sections (3.3.6) or in the
display subsection of the screen section (4.x.x)
I would say if you have no succes with the new XF86Config[-4]
then post it and we can try further...
