Ferry, I feel all guilty now ... :) Thanks for your kind email. The reason I'm running X on windows is because Windows is the standard desktop at my company, but
1) I do a lot of unix-related work hence it gives me more flexibility to swap and change as I please. 2)We also have a lot of unix software running here eg, Patrol (Systems Monitoring tool) and if you're using Windows 95 (just as an example) you won't be able to run a Patrol console on there, in which case, you have to export a unix view to your machine. 3) I have a dual boot machine at home with Mandrake on it, but I'm fed up with the hassle I have getting the internet to work on it(I have a winmodem) and also some multimedia stuff on the net will only work with Microsoft players... So I'm not a fan of Microsoft either but until WINE is a bit less buggy (I'm not paying for VMWARE) I'm forced to use Windows as my base OS and port unix stuff over to it, rather than vice versa. OK, back to the original problem with starting cygwin/xfree86 (on W2K) as a user (instead of admin)... I don't think it's a firewall problem 'cos I'm X is running on my local machine. As for the port problem, you only have to be root to open low port numbers .. but I'm not sure what port this is running on. (Thinking out aloud!) Erm.. the key here is probably to go back and read the cygwin manual to learn a bit more about how security is set up on cygwin running on W2k. I think the problem is with my environment. Oh well, look Ferry... I think I'm writing to the wrong user group here so don't worry about this problem anymore unless you've been converted to windows and decided to run X on it!! I've kind of put it on a back seat anyway 'cos I've got other work to get on with. When I fix it though I'll be sure to let you know!! Thanks for trying to help me out, and sorry for the disagreements....
