I've been struggling for days trying to get a working installation of xfree86. I failed to get a working installation using fink, so I've tried following the recipe in "Installation Of XFree86, Fink, Window Maker and Gimp" authored by Rob Griffiths & posted at www.macosxhints.com. I know of at least one other individual that followed this formula with success. I did a mass download, getting all files using ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/Xfree86/4.1.0/binaries/Darwin-ppc.tar. I tried to eliminate all evidence of previous installations by getting rid of /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11. I did find that install.sh does not over-write existing directories, and by analyzing the installation process, I found other directories that needed to be removed.
I've also downloaded & installed XDarwin 1.03a.
Now when I try to launch XDarwin rootless, nothing happens and I see the following in the Console window:

Quitting XDarwin...
I elected not to install the Speedo and Type1 fonts at installation. When I launch XDarwin in the full-screen mode, I see a window with an "X" in the upper right corner of my screen, another window near the middle of my screen, then I get the following in my Console window:

I cannot start using startx, as it isn't recognized by Terminal command line. It looks like I don't have a working xfree86 installation. I'd greatly appreciate suggestions as to how I progress from here.
Thanks,
Bob Rodenburg
