I recently installed XFree86 4.1.0.x on a FreeBSD 4.4 box. I also installed
KDE as the desktop. I'm trying to get the color depth greater than what it
currently is...because I *think* it might correct a problem I'm having. The
problem is that when I fire up some applications (XMMS and Mozilla being two
of them) I get some kind of goofy color change on all other windows but the
trouble applications. So I drop back out of X, and fire up with:

startx -depth 16 (also tried 24) and it looks no different than before. I
see that -bpp is unsupported, but I tried it anyway. No difference. Same
color palette issues when I start up Mozilla and XMMS.

My video card is ATI Rage 128 (AGP version). I configured X by doing X
-configure, and then moved the configuration it generated to
/etc/XF86Config. All was good until I tried Mozilla and XMMS. :)

In XF86Config there are entries for 16 and 24, so I'm not sure why it
doesn't work. One thing I did notice was no height by width entries? Maybe
it's defaulting to some larger resolution that only allows a certain depth?
I'm really running out of ideas; I tried reading some of the docs a bit on
4.1.0, and I'm still coming up blank. I do notice the usual Alt-Ctrl-+ and
Alt-Ctrl-- doesn't work, and maybe that's because there are no entries for
different resolutions?

Cheers, and thanks in advance...

The default Magic Word, "Abracadabra", actually is a corruption of the Hebrew
phrase "ha-Bracha dab'ra" which means "pronounce the blessing".
