matt ---

bless you.

eight months is a long time.

i bought 4 of these things in march,
been working on it off and on since then,
put in a good 30 hours just this saturday and sunday,
  and some more this morning.
since there are no 132 column modes on this card,
  it has been trying.

oddly enough, i had tried the [almost] exact
  'moonbuggy' approach this morning
[ and, yes, i found your link didn't get me there ].
however, i didn't think to lie about the chip.
the ati site said the chip was the 'VR'.

now that i can read the pci probe, i learn it is an 'SM'
  [ of --all-- the two-letter combinations ;-) ].

so i had: Chipset "... VR ...".
replacing VR with RF solved it.

next: vidcontrol the mouse on and off
did not solve the device busy error.

looking at /dev, i tried changing

"option" "device" "/dev/psm0" to
"option" "device" "/dev/mouse".

eureka --- x launches; but the mouse is bogus.

looking at various xf86config examples, i tried changing

"option" "protocol" "ps/2" to
"option" "protocol" "auto".

eureka eureka --- IT'S ALIVE.

these were legacy settings from 3.3.various.
they worked back then.

i'm running 4.1.0 on freebsd 4.2.
i have 4.4, i just haven't gotten around to it yet.

----------------------------------------------------------

so, tonight, since i am still in a holiday mood,
in fact, even more so than on thursday,
i will give thanks both for your existence
  and for your prompt reply.

thanks also to 'moonbuggy'.

then i will do what i was going to do on friday morning,
as i do every year on thanksgiving friday:
i will listen as arlo guthrie
relates the story of alice's restaurant
    and the several thanksgiving dinners
    that couldn't be beat.

with feeling.

after all, this year, there's a war on.

long life, good health, much happiness
