[Newbie]Failed in attempt to install 4.1.0

Anybody seen this ?
 
I attempt to "Make World and make install" 4.1.0 and I get a "Fatal Server Error". So I download and compile kernel 2.4.10 and when I try to reboot, my PC crashes with:
 
loading <labelname>BEDA
too big
 
What's this all about ?
