Hi,
according to your log, your video ram is only 1MB
in that case you can probably only use a depth of 8
with 1024x768, or (there I am on thin ice) use a frame
buffer.
I would proceed as follows:
1. copy the XF86Config.new into /etc/X11/XF86Config (I
don't know FreeBSD but I assume it does not use
XF86Config-4, if it does then copy in that file)
2. I would hack that file and set the DefaultDepth to
8 and copy the modes line into the Subsection
"Display" with that depth 
NOTE you seem to have "1024*768" (or is it my eyes?)
it should be "1024x768"
and then try
later you can try to go to depth 16.
