Thanks for that suggestion - but it didn't work for me, I'm afraid. The high level of video output (1.0 V p-p on RGB) happens at any resolution and color depth, but only with XFree86. If I use any other way of generating a white screen, I get a more sensible 0.65 V p-p. The effect of the higher output is to produce edge distortions on all my makes of monitor, which sure enough can be reduced by using the contrast control on the monitor, but on my CTX PR960F monitors you still get cruddy effects like patterns between characters which makes them difficult to read at small point sizes, which I don't get with other makes of cards which don't make use of the XFree86 SVGA driver. I searched the web and found talk of a command called 'fader' to control screen brightness from software. (Keywords to find it again: fader brightness XFree86). Can anyone help with the source or an rpm ? Would it work? Or any other comments on this problem please! Thanks again, Lawrence.
