I seem to have similiar problem to #753: After trying to change theme in
Gnome X crashed and I started getting:

shutdown).

messages. I no longer can launch applications from terminal.

I'm completely new and have been frustratingly installing stuff to try
to get a usable GUI. I Xtools as well as XFree on my Mac OSX.1 which
I've heard is a no-no. However, these fatal errors seem to related to
Gnome and editing /etc/hosts . I need more explicit instructions for
example-how exactly do I determine if there's a line in /etc/hosts
specifying current hostname (what is this (an IP address?, name) how do
I set mode to single user? etc. How do I edit /etc/inittab default
runlevel to 3?

Sorry for this but I got myself totalled?

Is there a simple way to un-install system and start fresh without
wiping out my Mac OS (on same partition/)
