Folks -
A customer of ours is currently porting their application from a standalone DEC Alpha
running OSF/Motif, to a networked system in which the Alpha becomes a client to an X
server provided by my company. The X server is running Red Hat 7.2, so XFree86 v4.1.0,
but previously ran v7.1, so XFree86 v4.0.3.
Under 7.2, they encountered a problem which was not seen under 7.1. Their software
requests the following font:
b&h lucidatypewriter bold r normal sans 19 * 100 100 m 120 iso8859 1
and throws an exception saying that the string cannot be mapped to a font. And indeed,
this combination is not available when we look in xfontsel on the X server running Red
Hat 7.2.
However, it's not visible on Red Hat 7.1 either. In fact, we couldn't even see it on
the Alpha (even when we ran /usr/bin/X11/xlsfonts).
I don't know much about fonts. How come there's this difference between 7.1 & 7.2? Are
the Alpha and/or 7.1 X server substituting a "near match" for the requested font, in a
way that 7.2 can't do?
Thanks in advance.
