don't know whether this will help you much, in my RH 7.2 installation you can find 
these fonts in
/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/fonts.dir and ...../fonts.alias as well as in 
.../75dpi/fonts.dir and
..../fonts.alias
since these are the fixed fonts which X like to have, I can imagine that you get into 
trouble if
it does not find them. Strange is that I installed RH 7.2 on a couple of PC without 
any such
issue. However, if you specified font paths in your XF86Config-4, you better have the 
fixed fonts
path come before the others (I have misc followed by 100dpi, 75 dpi and then the 
others)
As I said above I don't know whether this will help much
