I don't remember what the original problem was; but here's a sort-of-cure-all

1. build a kernel with framebuffer support (it's actually really easy).
(I think you mentioned something about using mandrake? I think mandrake 8.1
uses a framebuffer console by default)

2. use the framebuffer X server (driver "fbdev"); from XFree86 packages
provided by your distro.

it won't be an accelerated X server, but it'll give you output. :)
