There is a book by Henry McGilton and Rachel Morgan that does an excellent job of covering the basics. Title is "Introducing the Unix System". I don't know if its still in print, but it should be available in libraries. It's a complete introduction to Unix, Linus Tovalds would have been a small child when the book was published.
