I tried to post two logs for the v4 X server (one when v4 works after the v3 server is run once, and one when the v4 server exits to console and hangs after the v4 server is run once), but so far they aren't showing up. I guess the size of the posting needs to be approved by a list moderator, although all I'm posting is two log files. I couldn't get much out of them, the difference is some register dumps and messages regarding resets at the end, including source line numbers in driver files. If they post, let me know if you see something more illuminating. Meanwhile, all I can make of it is that the s3virge driver in version 4.10 somehow leaves the video processor in a state that the return to console mode can't handle. I've seen various discussions of clock settings for text mode using TextClockFreq and maybe other clock settings (mentioning that the graphics drivers can't read the clocks for text mode), but getting any actual parameters or options for a specific laptop, let alone my Toshiba Tecra 780DVD seemed elusive.
