Specifically I'm running FreeBSD 4.4 RELEASE Xfree 4.1.0
I change de ProjectRoot to /usr/X11R6
and the error is

.
.
.
cd ./config/makedepend && make -f Makefile.proto bootstrap
"Makefile.proto", line 81: Need and operator
make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue

I check the line and it is

define ProjectRoot /usr/X11R6

If I comment the ProjectRoot in site.def
I get the following

.
.
.
don't know how to make ../../extras/Mesa/include/GL/gl.h
