The computer is an HP Pavilion 8390 - Pentium II 450Mhz with 384MB RAM. The video
card is a Radeon 32MB SDR installed in PCI slot 1. This card replaces the delivered,
on-board AGP video (ATI RAGE PROD 2x AGP with 8MB).

I'm attempting to run Mandrake Linux 8.1. I have just finished downloading the latest
stable Debian release, but have not attempted to install it. Would that make any
difference?

I can run Mandrake in text mode with no problem.  The machine locks when startx runs;
startx changes the video mode, a graphical mouse cursor appears, and that's the end of
it. The mouse cursor moves, but that's it. <Ctrl><Alt><Backspace> has no effect, nor
does any other keyboard input that I've tried have any effect.

I have this exact version of Mandrake running on another P2 450MHz machine without
this problem, but it's using an older video card.

Thanks!

Mark
