Usually this happens when your card is not recognised.
You could try running Xconfigure if you have it, or (if you have 4.x.x) XFree86 
-configure  or the
equivalent (don't know the name) for 3.3.6. - (watch out that XFree86 -configure 
usually generates
/root/XF86Config.new which must be renamed and moved to /etc/X11...)
Your log was not posted so it is difficult to know what you have.
If the XF86Config[-4] generated still does not give you satisfaction you can always 
try hacking
the XF86Config[-4] file (it should be in /etc/X11 for most distributions) 
I would first try driver "vesa" for 4.x.x or "SVGA" for 3.3.6  in the graphic device 
section.
