in case your using slack 8.0, type in "XFree86 -configure" , this will
generate a config file. It tells you as well where to find that file,
probably you will have to copy it to /etc/X11/ afterwards and maybe
rename to XF86config (uppercase matters!)

when you're done with this type startx and see if it works. If you have
a very new or very old card, chances are it wont, in this case type "man
5 XFree86" and read, read, read... true mastery of linux requires a lot
of reading.

Ah, forgot one thing: after configuring X type "xwmconfig" (to all
newbies: this is only for slack!) and choose a window manager, try them
all and find out what you like best. I recommend Gnome with Windowmaker.

what card, what monitor and what kernel version are you running?
