I did not follow the whole thread (yet I'm going last in first out) you are aware that 
having a
flat screen any resolution other than the standard one will either be extrapolated 
(super ugly) or
will only use part of the screen (rather tiny...) I would do as Carl said he does: set 
up two
users with different resolutions and only one resolution per user (I am doing it with 
a laptop
also one is for the laptop alone (800x600) the other for the docked laptop 
(1024x768)...
I have not tried switching resolution with a laptop keyboard so I cannot tell whether 
the "keypad"
+ and - work there. However, I have found out that switching resolution that way did 
+not help (at
least in my case) because the virtual resolution remained fixed (the largest of the 
mode line if
not defined elsewhere) obliging me to work with only part of the window visible in the 
lower
resolutions...
