1. Are you sure you are modifying the *right* XF86Config (do man XFree86 to see the 
sequence in
which X looks for the configuration file)
2. Do you have more than one screen section? and / or are you sure of which display 
subsection you
use? (it's determined by the selected depth - if not by the defult depth...)
basically X should give you the same gamut of resolution as Windows, probably with the 
same
decrease in picture quality...
