[Rest snipped]

I just installed a Radeon 7500 and upgraded to Suse 7.3 (XFree86
4.1.x). The 7500 isn't supported yet, so I used the frame buffer
device following Suse's instructions. Nothing worked until I
realized that the 7500 supports 32 bit color but not 24 bit color,
while the frame buffer supports 24 bit color but not 32 bit color.

Once I set the frame buffer to 16 bit color (at 1024 x 768) it
worked as advertised. To do this I set the lilo.conf vga
parameter to vga=791 and reran lilo. The rest of the setup went
smoothly.

Check your Red Hat docs for something similar.
