Till 9:30 AM two Mondays ago, my monitor,
graphics card, X-server and gnome worked perfectly.
At that point I made the fateful mistake of leaving
a DVD in the CD/DVD-compartment
when linux booted up. Ever since, I have had
problems with the monitor (or X-system?).
In fact, even if linux boots up in text mode,
the characters on the screen appear vertically
compressed. Like as though the DVD magically
poked the video card or monitor or X-software into
recalcitrance.
I know it sounds bizarre, but I am attributing
this to the presence of the DVD because the
screen worked _perfectly_ until the DVD made
it's &^!#@$%% appearance. Perhaps I am mistaken.
Maybe it's not got to do with the DVD. Nevertheless
I don't have a good X-system now. What do I do?
Facts:
(1) The X-server file had not been touched
by the DVD incident. That is, it's date
of last modification was still quite old.
Same with Xconfig file. Even so, I created
a new X-server and X-config file. It was of
no help.
(2) Then I thought perhaps the video card was broken.
However, if I boot into Windoze, then the graphics
works perfectly.
(3) Could it be the monitor? How do I adjust H-sync
and V-sync on my monitor manually?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Arvind
