Hi, this is a reply to a post I found in the list archive at http://www.xfree86.org/pipermail/newbie/2001-June/008045.html
I tried to contact the author directly, but the domain does not exist anymore. So I hope he himself or someone else on the list can help me. ----- original post ----- Hello, I've compiled XFree86 4.1.0 and installed and after that, I noticed dots, rain, or noise (whatever you want to call it) on the screen. Can someone please tell me what is going on? I'm running RedHat 7.1 KDE 2.1.1 (no kdelibs 2.1.2 yet) XFree86 4.1.0 My system specs: Motherboard PCChips M571, SVGA SiS 5598, Pentium 233, 64MB, and my monitor is a Monochrome VGA (640x480 @65536) Please keep in mind that I'm really newbie to Linux, XFree86 and KDE :-) Thanks in advance, Norberto ----- original post end ----- I have exactly the same problem, except that I am using XFree86 4.0.3 (that comes with a distribution based on redhat 7.1) and GNOME. My Hardware is a IBM Netvista A40, which uses the i810 intel chipset. The noise on the screen varies in intensity with different modes, in 320x200 it is barely visible, in 1280x1024 it is unusable to the extend that you cannot see anything at all anymore except vertical colored lines (red-green-blue-red-green-blue) all over the screen. My *assumption* is that the shared video memory somehow gets overwritten, but I have no idea what to do against it. Currently I try to specify the "NoAccel" option in XF86Config, but it does not change anything (or I'm doing something terribly wrong ...)
